The Mediterranean coast of France is a showcase for beautiful beaches, enticing bistros, and posh people. Visitors want to see all these things and be impressed by them while also feeling like they belong. Luckily, there are more than just mega motorboats, fast cars, and film premieres along the French Riviera. While swankiness abounds, center stage is also given to a handful of other public, inclusive events during the busy summer months. Check out this preview of attractions.
Take a trip over to the tiny principality of Monaco to see the Musee Oceanographique's current exhibit. Frequently featuring photography, the exhibit will open your eyes to the art scene and have you ready for more. Later in the summer, go to Antibes to catch the three day street fest called Deantibulations. This free performing arts festival features acrobatics, dancing, and theater. If you consider haute couture and dressing well to be an art form, then you'll want to check out a fashion show or shopping event in Cannes. Whether browsing or purchasing, Cannes has stores that will inspire.
The main event in music may very well be "Jazz a Juan," the jazz festival in Juan-les-Pins. Juan-les-Pins juts out from Antibes and provides the perfect venue for jazz lovers to gather and hear live music in an idyllic setting. The festival lasts for two weeks, and from 8:30 pm to midnight an international crowd gathers to relish the jazzy notes just like Hemingway and Fitzgerald did. There is also a jazz fest in Nice, and you can catch a staged musical at the Palais Nikaia (Nice) as well.
If modern, pop, techno, or house music is more your style, then you're in luck because all the clubs have DJs to keep the party going. There's never a dull moment in St. Tropez, Cannes, or Nice!
The Formula One race in Monte Carlo is in May, prior to official summer season. The warmer months host sailing regattas and the equestrian championship. The Giraglia Rolex Cup annual regatta from St. Tropez to San Remo, Italy is a weeklong race covering 243 miles! Not on board a yacht? Watch the competition from St. Tropez's bustling waterfront. You could always grab a beer and a seat in a bar to watch a soccer match instead. Both Nice and Monaco have Football Clubs so you have the option of cheering on a local team.
For people who would rather participate in sports than watch an event, the French Riviera has tennis courts, golf courses, and hiking trails.
Perhaps the biggest and most inclusive event in France is the celebration of Bastille Day. The commemoration of the start of the French Revolution is on July 14. There is a traditional military parade in Nice followed by concerts on the Promenade des Anglais and fireworks over the Mediterranean. Everyone is encouraged to join the celebration. What better place to appreciate France than on a warm beach on the French Riviera?!
